Members push for mediation in IoR dispute

UK: Members of the Institute of Refrigeration have voted for mediation in the ongoing dispute between ex-president Graeme Fox and the board of trustees, which has already cost £32,000.

It was sadly coincidental that perhaps the most explosive AGM in the Institute’s 125-year history should take place on November 5, firework night, but it was wise and calm heads that prevailed to at least postpone a proposed no confidence vote in the IoR board.

The dispute over the alleged behaviour of president-elect Lisa-Jayne Cook during the last IoR dinner in February had led to the exclusion of then president Graeme Fox and his eventual resignation.

To the dismay of many members, both in attendance at the AGM in London and those following events online, it was revealed that the dispute had already accumulated solicitors fees of £32,000.

Graeme Fox, backed by a number of supporters, had proposed a vote of no confidence in CEO Miriam Rodway and the board of trustees.

The IoR had not previously commented on the dispute, apart from one statement by the IoR’s appointed solicitor. In a counter proposal, Miriam Rodway proposed to make all the emails and minutes relating to the dispute available to members at a further special meeting at the end of this month.

In a sometimes heated discussion, former president Graeme Maidment, and others in attendance, argued for the two sides to seek mediation in the interests of the Institute.

This was supported by a majority of the members present and online and for an arbitration meeting to take place before the end of the year.

Fox agreed to mediation but insisted that his proposal should remain on record until after this had been completed.

The issue somewhat overshadowed the election of Craig Girdlestone – one of those who implored the parties to seek mediation – and Christopher Griffiths to the board. Both were successful in the member vote and will serve for the next three years.
