Danfoss adds large‑scale CO₂ ejector

DENMARK: Danfoss has introduced a large‑scale CO₂ ejector designed to optimise industrial refrigeration systems.

While CO2 is seen as an attractive alternative to traditional synthetic refrigerants, concerns about system efficiency, particularly at high ambient temperatures, have been a barrier to adoption in industrial settings.

Danfoss says its new large CO2 ejector helps address those concerns, enabling industrial-sized refrigeration and heat pump systems to reduce energy consumption, even in warm climates.

With one of the largest capacities in the world, the new ejector is said to offer a number of features that improve the efficiency of industrial CO2 systems, resulting in cost savings and making CO2 a more attractive option in industrial settings.

These include its fixed geometry design, enabling higher control and efficiency, and user-friendly design with housing and cartridge delivered separately for easy installation. It features integrated check valve and filter, with a dedicated and user-friendly driver (EKE 80) enabling flexible integration with any PLC controller.

The ejector’s 140bar pressure rating makes it a good fit for transcritical CO2 systems in most climates.

Serving as a main expansion valve in industrial racks above 500kW, the large CO2 ejector offers work recovery capabilities at the gas cooler outlet. It can be used with industrial racks with high pressure or low pressure lift systems. The HP lift version leverages high-pressure gas energy to move gas from the suction side to parallel compressors, reducing the required compressor capacity and overall energy consumption. Alternatively, the LP lift version recovers energy typically lost during expansion to increase suction pressure. This process lowers the energy consumption of the compressors. Both configurations enhance system efficiency by optimising energy usage within the refrigeration cycle.
